We’ve all had our buttons pushed at some point. Maybe someone uttered hurtful words, made a snide remark, or offered unsolicited advice that brought out the worst in us. Or maybe it was a self-inflicted trigger.

Whatever it is that bugs you, it has the potential to make you fly off the handle and react defensively in ways that aren’t true to who you are. This survival mechanism equips us to deal with life-threatening situations. Yet most of the time the sources of our trigger responses are harmless.

No matter where you are on the emotional reactivity continuum, you’ll benefit tremendously by developing the self-mastery to respond gracefully whenever you’re provoked. When you’re in command of your emotions, you can stand tall, strong and sturdy, like an oak tree.
